'Shapes of Things' by Peta Kruger

Courtesy of the Artist is excited to announce Peta Kruger’s upcoming jewellery exhibition, Shapes of Things.

For this exhibtion, Peta has investigated characteristics of traditional fine jewellery and costume jewellery through the processes of deconstruction and reconstruction.

Opening on July 9th, Shapes of Things will exhibit a series of handpainted brooches, neckpieces and earrings.

I consider my craft practice as perhaps beginning in early childhood, where I began to play and experiment with materials, so I approach jewellery making with those techniques I know best: cutting, folding, colouring in and glueing - skills I have been refining since kindergarten.

This experimentation has formed a series of works that appear like clusters of jewellery parts, repeated shapes and colour. I sense a fractal-like nature to the metal and gemstone structures of traditional and costume jewellery designs, and this has led me to consider jewellery as uniquely patterned objects - as coded visual systems that form representations of individual personalities. I am curious about a wearer’s process in selecting a piece of jewellery, the connections they make between the physical object and their own ideas about identity.

Peta Kruger has worked as a graphic designer, illustrator and now jeweller. In 2007, she travelled to London and worked as an assistant jeweller to Scott Wilson and Jane Adam at Cockpit Arts. From 2009 to 2012 she was an Associate of the Metal Design Studio and tenant at Adelaide’s JamFactory. During this time participated in numerous exhibitions and projects, including a year-long JamFactory Metal Design Studio artist-in-residence program at Gilles Street Primary School.

In 2011 she received an Australia Council for the Arts Jump grant and funding from the Ian Potter Foundation to undertake a mentorship with German/New Zealand jeweller Karl Fritsch. She currently works from her studio based in Adelaide.
