'To Stir' by Danni Schwaag

This November Courtesy of the Artist will host To Stir, a jewellery exhibition by Danni Schwaag. Through four separate series of work, Danni explores geometry, colour, and composition and questions the relationship between precious and non-precious materials.

Danni’s Stirring Staff brooch series is the result of years of mixing acrylic paint. “Starting out as a stick of timber, my stirring staff is now covered with almost a kilo of acrylic paint, mainly white with fine streaks of colour. I love how this tool which was once used for painting has turned into a painting for the body”.

In her Concrete Colours brooches, Danni has breathed new life into the remnants of dried up acrylic paint. “I use relics from my studio and transform them from fine art into applied art. I’m somewhat recycling these hardened glass-like paints I find at the bottom of glass jars.”.

Hand carving mother pearl and combining it with gold, copper and enamel is Danni’s way of exploring the idea of beauty. In her Mother of Pearl series Danni questions preciousness by delicately fusing natural and synthetic materials with one another. “What is beauty? A gold nugget or a dried piece of acrylic paint? For me it starts to get exciting when I mix precious with non-precious. Every piece has its own value because it’s unique.”

Courtesy of the Artist is excited to announce that Danni Schwaag will be travelling to Australia from her hometown in Germany for opening night celebrations.
