'Weathered' by Linda van Niekerk

Linda van Niekerk will bring her exhibition ‘Weathered’ to Courtesy of the Artist in March.

For this exhibition Linda has once again drawn on the strong sense of place that she derives from her home in Tasmania’s beautiful south. Her African heritage is evident in the bold execution of her ideas. The exhibition will present naturally weathered Adrift pieces that feature Tasmanian wilderness driftwood:

“I continue to be fascinated by the wonderful shapes and textures I find in the driftwood that I collect and live with until it tells me what it wants to be. No two pieces of driftwood are the same and this means that each piece has it’s own unique personality. One piece in this exhibition has even declared itself an arm piece without very much input from me at all.”

Bold silver Weathered works are finished to mimic the natural process of weathering. “I have long thought how interesting the silver looked when it is annealed to allow itself to be softened and formed. Like the driftwood, no two pieces of silver oxidised in this way look the same and remind me strongly of the beautiful weathered trees of the Tasmanian wilderness.”

With a further play on the title, a selection of works has been inspired by Tasmania’s vast skies and extreme weather conditions. Like the weather, these pieces can evolve into differing forms. “I have once again indulged my fascination with cloud forms to create more cloud neckpieces as well as adding a touch of lightning for this exhibition.

As always, my desire is to create simple sculptural pieces that encourage the wearer to be bold, proud and walk tall.”
