Rare Earth: Australian Made 2017
Join us on Thursday 13th July 2017 at Courtesy of the Artist Loft in the Strand Arcade to celebrate the third instalment of Rare Earth: Australian Made.
In this contemporary jewellery collection, our six resident artists have once again married their craftsmanship with some of Australia’s most coveted gemstones. Also featuring in in this years collection are distinctively rare and unique gems from around the globe.
The rarest of sea green, vivid blue, vibrant yellow and luscious teal sapphires have been worked into this years collection by all six of our artists. Also in the line up are white, cognac, pink and yellow Argyle diamonds from the East Kimberly region, zircons from the Northern Territory, black spinel from Queensland, chrysoprase and tiger iron from Western Australia, crystal opal from Andamooka and boulder opal from Queensland.
Our very own custom gemstone ‘The Fitzroy’ cut by resident gem cutter Doug Menadue from a sapphire fossicked in the Suberia Gemfields in Queensland will also be on show.
Each stone comes with its own unique story, enriched further by the hands of our resident artists Cesar Cueva, Cinnamon Lee, Marina Antoniou, Fealofani Elisara, Todd Turner and Emma Fielden.
We can’t wait to share these stories with you as we delve even deeper into our relationships with our makers.
Showcasing alongside our Rare Earth: Australian Made collection will also be the work of Australian ceramicist Avi Amesbury.
This body of work is an expression of Avi's attraction to and relationship with the notion of place. Avi's vessel have been made using southern ice porcelain which was developed by Les Blakebrough in Tasmania, volcanic ash, and clay from the riverbed in Barragga Bay NSW.
SAPPHIRE – THE SCENT
Perfumer, Ainslie Walker adds a new dimension to this year’s Rare Earth Australian Made collection as part of The Invisible Accessory Project. Ainslie has worked alongside our 6 artists, who’s craftsmanship showcase the countries most coveted and unique gemstones in their collections for Rare Earth. Inspired by the colours and luminescence of the cut Australian sapphires, Ainslie shaped a bright fragrance utilising Australian ‘gems’ of the perfume world. Raw materials were sourced from all over the country including rare and precious Boronia Absolute, Southern Rosalina and Kunzea from Tasmania and sustainable Sandalwood Album from Western Australia.
During the course of Rare Earth: Australian Made, Ainslie Walker will be running perfume making workshops as part of The Invisible Accessory Project. Find out more here.
